Ayurveda has discussed the Shirahshula (headache) as the most common complaints among all type of Shiroroga. The 21st century full with stressful life, worry, tension, anxiety, fear, grief, creates many psychosomatic disorders. Tension headache is one of them which can be compared with Vatika Shirahshula .In Ayurvedic texts mental factors like Bashpa (tears), Shoka (grief), Bhaya (fear), Trasa (desire) have been attributed in its aetiopathogenesis1. Based on symptomatology Vatika Shirahshula can be correlated with tension type headache defined as a bi-temporal and occipital pain. The pain increases in the evening with giddiness, disturbed sleep and loss of memory. In this study total 25 patients of Vatika Shirahshula divided into two groups were treated with: 1) Dashamula kwatha Shirodhara for 30 minutes duration in the morning for 21 days, 2) Medhyarasayana formulation (Brahmi, Shankhapushpi, Jatamansi, Pippalimula) for one month. The patients were subjected to the evaluation of cardinal sign and symptoms of Vatika Shirahshula on the basis of scores according to their severity, frequency and duration before and after the treatment. Result shows that Shirodhara provide very good results in chief complaints, manasabhava, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (H.A.R.S), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (H.D.R.S), with quantitatively relief measured with GSR-biofeedback instrument. Medhyarasayana provide better relief in blurring of vision, stiffness of neck, phonophobia, memory loss, dhairya, krodha, mana, medha and smriti. |
