Rheumatology is such a branch of medicine where much is known about the pathogenesis of the disease except the exact cause & cure. Ailing and crippling due to disease pathology results physical, mental social and spiritual torture to the humankind creating a vast field to work and research for physicians of any pathy. As alternative science and art of medicine, Ayurveda has much to contribute from its authority in the academic understanding of the various aspects of the disease and in clinical practice as well. But as a branch speciality, rheumatology is definitely at very primitive stage as regards the Ayurveda is concerned. The present book 'Principles and Practice of Ayurvedic Rheumatology' by Dr. Sanjeev Rastogi, published by Chaukambha Sanskrit Pratishthan, Delhi is a cautious, candid, cumulative, concrete and colloidal effort which may prove to be the hand book for the rheumatologists of any branch of medicine specially Ayurveda. Foreword of the book are signed by Prof. Siddhartha Das, Professor and head, department of Rheumatology, CSMM university, Lucknow is the pioneer in the branch of Rheumatology not only in Northern India but he is an international authority in rheumatology. His own words are best to be quoted here: 'In the present book, the author has kept an open mind and has made commendable effort to study arthritis in a spirit of scientific enquiry. The book on the whole, will be of use to students of rheumatology in what ever system of medicine'.
The contents of the book have been divided into five main chapters as workups viz. Pre treatment workup, Peritreatment workup and post treatment workup and it is supplemented with epilogue, Appendices, Bibliography and index. In the pre-treatment work up the conceptual part of the joint disorders as described in Ayurvedic text has been translated in very concise and complete form and in parlance to modern medicine that it leaves no confusion even for a beginner in the field of rheumatology. The modern know how and Ayurvedic concept has been well amalgamated and important features have been given in boxes for easy and complete understanding. The latest information from sporadic works in the field of Ayurveda has been incorporated to help the diagnosis. Much stress has been put for psychological status of the patient of arthritis and co existing disorders.
Treatment work up deals with non-pharmacological approach, Panchakarma therapy, diet and fasting, psychotherapy, life style modification, and pharmacological approach. All these aspects have been dealt in detail and up to date information have been candidly compiled with the aim that "A well acquainted Ayurvedic physician at a set up with the basic facilities for these non pharmacological therapies and with an ability to use them quantifiably will be able to add value to his treatment (pharmacological) along with a cut in the treatment cost and time substantially. Rest and exercise, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, thermotherapy, cryotherapy, traction, massage manipulations and pancha karma therapy have been dealt in details and every aspect and the pharmacological treatment is also dealt in the same way. In peri-treatment work-up, monitoring of the whole branch of rheumatology has been suggested. A standard setup for Rheumatology clinic has been described.
Post treatment work up deals with code of ethics in Ayurvedic rheumatology practice, follow-up assessment, referral plans and assessment and need of public awareness. Supplemented with important appendices and bibliography the book is a complete hand book and guide for students and scholars and the practitioners who wish to peep in the wood of rheumatology in Ayurveda. It stands to lead in the particular field.

Dr. Sanjeev Rastogi has qualified in Ayurveda from Lucknow University. He did his post graduation from Banaras Hindu University. He has been selected from public service commission UP, India for the post of lecturer in State Ayurvedic college. Since then, he is involved in teaching and research with UG and PG training programs. He is keen researcher, enthusiastic faculty member and sharp clinician. With a mission to establish rheumatology as an independent branch in Ayurvedic clinic and practice, his continuous endeavor in the field has generated research papers and monographs and the book.
Presently he is working as a lecturer and consultant at PG dept of Kaya Chikitsa, State Ayuredic College, Lucknow, India.
